Charlie Matheson Jr. is the secondary antagonist of Slender: The Arrival, appearing as the main antagonist of Homestead, the main protagonist of Memories, and the secondary antagonist of The Arrival and Nightmare.

The son of Charles Matheson and Diane, after learning of the Slender Man's existence, he was lured to the woods, abducted and turned into a proxy.

Role In Plot

In the hidden level, "Memories", Charlie was playing at the beach with his family and having a picnic. He sees a trail of toy train pieces leading him to the woods. As he grabs the last part of the train, Slender Man begins to stalk him. His parents start calling out for him; playfully at first, but soon transitioning into panic. Charlie begins to run through the woods in fear, only to be cornered in a deadend by Slender Man's tentacles. As the tentacles grab Charlie, he cries out for help, and his father lets out one final audible cry for his name. The screen then turns black as the tentacles bind across Charlie's face.

Charlie Matheson goes missing for 9 years. During those times, his father is haunted by his proxified form, a decaying zombie-like figure, eventually leading to Charles' suicide In the hidden level, "Homestead". Carl 'CR' Ross had come to the old Matheson Farmstead in an attempt to uncover what led to Charlie's disappearance and Charles' suicide.

While there, he discovers that one of Charlie's ancestors had unintentionally summoned the Slender Man to Oakside Park, where it began stalking and abducting them one by one until eventually they all committed suicide to destroy the creature's influence. CR also discovers that during family trips to the farm, Charlie had unintentionally discovered Slender Man's existence through letters left by previous Matheson's and even a picture of Slender Man in a family photo, leading to the entity abducting him.

While CR discovers this evidence, he is hunted by Slender Man and the proxified Charlie himself, though CR is unaware the creature is Charlie. Though CR does get the evidence he needs, he is inevitably chased off the farm by Charlie, dropping his camera and evidence of the event in the process.

In the Steam Update of the Arrival, he is encountered again sometime later in his old family house by a girl named Lauren, who was looking for her friend Kate, a girl that had suffered the same fate as Charlie. She tries approaching him but is viciously attacked, though when she looks back, Charlie had left the house.

After getting the key to open the door leading to the radio tower's hallway, Lauren is now being chased by Charlie Matheson Jr. Getting caught many times while in the hallway will kill her. Lauren then proceeds to a room where Carl Ross is where she was trapped. The fire near the door where Lauren entered is blown out and the door can be heard opening while footsteps are heard. The camera's battery is almost dead, and begins to flash incoherent shapes and loud noises while Charlie Matheson Jr. appears in the dark, closing in on Lauren and knocking her out cold. In the remastered version, after the tape ends, the door at the other side of the room opens and attempting to run into the hallway will make Charlie kill her instead of waking up in the basement.

Waking up in the basement of the house shows the decaying form of Charlie, guarding the stairs. Attempting to walk towards the stairs whilst he is guarding it will obviously be hindered and cause him to lash out rather violently, sending Lauren back. After exploring the basement, Charlie is suddenly gone, allowing Lauren to get out of the basement and investigate a low crying.

Trivia

• Similar to Kate, Charlie's proxy form is inspired by a character from the Ju-on: The Grudge horror film series. He is inspired by Toshio Saeki.
• In the chapters Prologue and The Arrival after waking up in the basement of the house, he is harmless.
  • However, in the levels Homestead and The Arrival while walking along the hallways of the radio tower after getting the key and returning to the hallway after the tape ends in the remastered version (which will open the door for the latter situation), he will attack and kill the player.
